Kohler’s Dekoda Encryption Claim Challenged by Evidence of Company Access to User Images

Kohler confirms Dekoda data is decrypted on its servers, contradicting its end-to-end encryption marketing.

Overview

  • Technologist Simon Fondrie-Teitler analyzed the Kohler Health app and network traffic and found no sign of a true end-to-end encrypted session.
  • In an email reviewed by 404 Media, a Kohler privacy team member said data is encrypted in transit and at rest but is decrypted and processed on Kohler systems.
  • Kohler’s privacy page and marketing had stated user data is “end to end, at rest and in transit,” a description at odds with company-side decryption.
  • The Dekoda toilet camera launched earlier this year for about $600, with subscriptions starting at $6.99 per month and reaching $12.99 for larger households.
  • Coverage notes potential use of images for AI training and recalls past enforcement over inflated E2EE claims, while Kohler has not reported any regulatory action and did not immediately comment.
