Kochi Water Tank Chamber Bursts, Flooding Homes and Disrupting Supply

Preliminary assessments point to age-related failure, prompting inspections of the intact chamber plus temporary supply plans.

Overview

  • A wall of one chamber in a decades-old, two-chamber Kerala Water Authority reservoir at Thammanam ruptured around 2–2:30 a.m., unleashing a large volume of stored drinking water.
  • Officials cite a total capacity of roughly 1.35–1.38 crore litres for the reservoir, with the failed chamber holding about 68 lakh litres; the second chamber remains intact and is under evaluation.
  • Flooding damaged vehicles, compound walls and dozens of homes reported in the area, and a nearby health centre lost medicines and equipment, with no fatalities reported.
  • KWA warned of supply disruptions across parts of Kochi, including stretches from Vyttila to Petta and from Thammanam to Cherannallur, and said alternative arrangements are being readied, including increased pumping from Aluva.
  • State and local officials visited the site as engineers began structural checks and repairs, with the district administration assessing losses and compensation requests urged by MLAs.
