Kochi Water Metro Crosses 50 Lakh Riders in 29 Months

Strong ridership has positioned the service as a model, prompting interest from other cities and from the World Bank.

  • Officials said the milestone was reached on Saturday afternoon when Naina, part of an Australia-based Malayali couple, bought tickets at the High Court terminal to travel to Fort Kochi.
  • Kochi Metro Managing Director Loknath Behera marked the occasion by presenting a gift to Naina, identified as the 50 lakhth passenger.
  • The network currently deploys 20 boats across 10 terminals covering about 24 km on five routes.
  • Services run daily from 7:30 am to 9:00 pm with roughly 125 trips completed each day.
  • Ridership built steadily: 10 lakh in 107 days, 20 lakh in the next 95, 30 lakh after 185, 40 lakh after 160, and 50 lakh after a further 161 days, with officials also citing multiple awards and interest from 21 Indian locations and abroad.
