Kochi KWA Reservoir Chamber Collapses, Flooding Homes and Damaging Vehicles

Officials warn of localized water-supply disruptions following the failure.

Overview

  • A wall of one chamber of a Kerala Water Authority ground-level reservoir at Thammanam ruptured between 2:00 and 2:30 a.m., releasing water from a two-chamber tank holding about 1.35–1.38 crore litres.
  • Floodwater entered roughly 10 houses, damaged compound walls, and swept away parked vehicles, and a nearby health centre reported destroyed medicines and equipment.
  • KWA says supply will be affected in zones from Vyttila to Petta and from Thammanam to Cherannallur, while pumping to Vennala continues via a separate 85 lakh-litre reservoir.
  • The second chamber remains intact, and KWA is considering repairs to restore service while organizing alternative arrangements to maintain supply to Kochi and neighboring areas.
  • Local MLAs T J Vinod and Uma Thomas visited the site, with Thomas urging immediate compensation for property losses, and officials indicated the roughly 50-year age of the tank may have contributed to the rupture.
