Öko-Test Finds Contaminants in Green Pesto as Majority of Products Fail

Retailers pulled select batches after MOAH detections in new lab tests.

Overview

  • Öko-Test examined 21 green pestos sold in Germany and rated 12 as insufficient, with more than half failing overall.
  • Laboratories found elevated MOSH in 14 products and MOAH in 12, with six exceeding the European Commission’s proposed MOAH limits.
  • Some jars contained residues of up to five pesticides, including chlorantraniliprole and dimethomorph, which has been banned in the EU since 2024; plasticizers were also detected, such as DiNP in Aldi Nord’s Cucina Pesto alla Genovese.
  • Edeka removed a batch of Edeka Bio Pesto alla Genovese and Tegut withdrew Tegut Pesto Verde following the findings, according to Öko-Test.
  • The market shows progress versus 2020, with about one third of products receiving no mineral-oil point deductions, and two pestos earned top ratings: Bio-Zentrale Pesto Verde and Rossmann’s EnerBio Pesto alla Genovese.
