Known Rowdy on the Run After Fatal Stabbing in Kolkata’s Kalighat

Overview

  • The attack unfolded around 2 p.m. on June 13 in Beninandan Street after a debris truck collecting renovation waste clipped a neighbouring shop’s shed and signboard.
  • Jewellery shop manager Soumen Ghara stepped in to calm the dispute and was stabbed multiple times by Asesh Sarkar, later dying at SSKM Hospital.
  • Sarkar’s teenage son, Ankur, was critically wounded when he tried to restrain his father and remains in very serious condition at SSKM Hospital.
  • Asesh Sarkar, known locally as Piklu, has a history of criminal complaints including extortion and fled the scene immediately after the stabbing.
  • Kalighat police have registered a murder case and deployed teams across Kolkata in a massive manhunt to apprehend the accused.
