KNMI Issues First Regional Code Yellow for Dense Mist

It follows a law change that lets KNMI warn much smaller areas, improving precision, reducing unnecessary alerts, giving clearer safety guidance for drivers.

Overview

  • KNMI issued its first regionally targeted code yellow for dense mist on Saturday, covering a small area in southern Utrecht and parts of South Holland, North Brabant and Gelderland including Vijfheerenlanden, Lopik, IJsselstein, Nieuwegein, Houten and Wijk bij Duurstede.
  • The targeted warnings are possible because a legal change that took effect on 1 November allows KNMI to warn sub‑provincial regions instead of issuing alerts for whole provinces.
  • KNMI ended the initial Saturday evening warning earlier than the midnight window and then issued a new, narrowly focused code yellow on Sunday morning that ran until about 10:00 as conditions changed.
  • The institute warned that low visibility from mist can create dangerous road conditions and advised drivers to slow down, keep extra distance, use front fog lights when visibility drops below 200 metres and add rear fog lights when visibility is under 50 metres.
  • Forecasters and meteorologists say the regional alarms boost credibility by targeting only affected locations, and they expect variable weather next week with chilly nights near freezing and intermittent mist banks that could produce more localized warnings.
