KNMI Issues First Local Code Yellow for Dense Fog

A recent legal change lets the meteorological service issue warnings for specific towns so alerts match where dangerous weather is expected.

Overview

  • KNMI issued its first place-specific code yellow for dense fog on Saturday, November 7, covering small parts of southern Utrecht and limited areas of Zuid-Holland, Noord-Brabant and Gelderland.
  • The warning said visibility could fall below 200 metres in places and advised drivers to slow down, keep extra distance and use front fog lamps when visibility is under 200 metres and rear fog lamps when it drops below 50 metres.
  • The alert initially ran toward midnight but KNMI cancelled the warning in the middle of the evening after conditions eased.
  • The move follows a legal change that took effect on November 1 and builds on KNMI’s August rollout of targeted app alerts for fast‑forming severe thunderstorms, both aimed at avoiding unnecessary province‑wide warnings.
  • Officials say the more granular warnings should improve local preparedness and roadside safety while reducing false alarms for areas not affected by a hazard.
