KNMI Issues Code Yellow for Eastern Netherlands Over Icy Roads

Freezing of wet surfaces on bridges is expected to cause short-lived hazards for early commuters.

Overview

  • The alert covers Groningen, Drenthe, Overijssel, Gelderland, Noord-Brabant and Limburg, with warnings active into the morning and Gelderland’s notice running until 09:00.
  • KNMI cites slipperiness from snow and freezing rain, with the greatest risk on bridges, viaducts, bike paths and footpaths.
  • Snowfall was observed for several hours in the South Limburg hills, turning places such as Landgraaf, Termaar, Neerbeek, Sweikhuizen, Simpelveld, Schin op Geul, Vaals and Maastricht visibly white.
  • An initial yellow warning for Limburg on Wednesday night, set through about 03:00, was extended around midnight to much of the eastern half of the country.
  • The institute expects the situation to be brief, indicating the warnings will be lifted during the morning as road conditions improve.
