KNMI Issues Code Orange as Early Heatwave Heads for Midweek Peak

Sustained daytime highs in the mid-30s with tropical nights will stress health services, disrupt transport, force event changes and push schools to alter schedules.

Overview

  • The KNMI has issued a code orange warning that starts Wednesday at 12:00 for parts of central and southern Netherlands because forecasters expect at least three days of 34°C or hotter.
  • Meteorological models show the first heatwave of the year will bring at least five days above 25°C, several days above 30°C and daytime peaks commonly in the mid-30s with some forecasts warning of local maxima near 38–40°C.
  • National heat measures are active: the Nationaal Hitteplan and RIVM guidance urge hydration, avoiding exertion during midday hours and extra care for the elderly and children, while Rijkswaterstaat has activated a heat protocol to move stranded motorists to shaded facilities.
  • Operational impacts are already visible — the ANWB reports roughly 10% more breakdowns with hotter engines and failed batteries, many events have been cancelled or adapted and multiple schools are using hitte- or adjusted timetables to protect pupils.
  • Forecasters say a possible easing and isolated thunderstorms could bring relief by the weekend but local uncertainty remains, so people should prepare now by keeping homes cool, carrying water and checking travel and event updates.
