Knesset Home Committee Votes for Expulsion of Lawmaker Ofer Cassif

Impeachment proceedings move to Knesset plenum after Cassif's support for ICJ genocide case against Israel sparks controversy.

  • Knesset Home Committee voted 14-2 in favor of expelling lawmaker Ofer Cassif for expressing support for the genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice.
  • The impeachment will now be put to a vote in the Knesset plenum, where a minimum of 90 MKs must vote in favor of it for it to become final.
  • Cassif signed a petition accusing Israel of committing genocide against the Palestinians in Gaza, which led to the impeachment proceedings.
  • Deputy Attorney General Avital Sompolinski and Knesset Legal Advisor Sagit Afek argued that Cassif's signing of the petition did not meet the standard of 'support of armed struggle', and therefore did not qualify as a reason for impeachment.
  • If the impeachment is approved in the plenum, Cassif will have the right to appeal the decision to the High Court of Justice.
