KLM to Cut 5,000 Jobs in Two-Year Restructuring

KLM says it must reach an 8% profit margin to remain competitive.

Overview

  • KLM announced a two-year restructuring that will remove 5,000 roles through transfers, outsourcing and productivity measures.
  • Of the 5,000 positions, 2,000 will be moved to the Air France-KLM parent, about 800 will disappear through outsourced ground handling and roughly 1,000 will result from higher productivity.
  • The parent group reported stronger third-quarter results with a net profit of €938 million driven by higher cargo demand and diverted business travel while jet fuel costs rose because of the Iran war.
  • KLM plans to phase out older aircraft and aims for an 8% productivity improvement while seeking limited wage growth in the collective bargaining round that begins when the current contract expires in March 2027.
  • Management warned the current package may not be final and said further organisational, pay or staffing changes could follow if the moves do not restore the needed profitability, a prospect that will directly affect thousands of workers and outsourced ground staff.
