KLM Cancels Hundreds of Flights as Schiphol De-Icing Fluid Runs Low

KLM has sent staff to Germany to collect more fluid with no confirmed restock timeline.

Overview

  • KLM’s 25 de-icing trucks have operated continuously since Friday, using about 85,000 litres of fluid per day.
  • KLM attributes the low stock to extreme winter weather and delays from its supplier.
  • At least 300 KLM flights to and from Amsterdam were cancelled on Jan. 6.
  • Roughly 2,500 flights have been cancelled since Friday, affecting at least one-third of a million passengers.
  • Flightradar24 reports one-third of Amsterdam flights cancelled today and says the rate could reach 50–60%, while Schiphol notes runway de-icing supplies are ample and separate from aircraft fluid.
