KLM Announces €1 Billion Restructuring and 15% Workforce Reorganization

KLM says the program will cut costs to free funds for fleet renewal, digital services and better customer experience.

Overview

  • KLM launched the plan on Thursday, Nov. 5, 2026, saying it aims to lift annual earnings by about €1 billion to pay for fleet and service investments.
  • The company will reorganize roughly 15% of roles, or about 5,000 positions, and says it will prioritise voluntary departures, natural attrition and internal transfers to avoid compulsory mass layoffs.
  • Short‑haul flying will be simplified toward Airbus A321neos and Embraer E195‑E2s, with Boeing 737s and Embraer E190s to be retired and previously planned A320neos reallocated to Transavia.
  • KLM will outsource about 800 ground‑services jobs, transfer roughly 2,000 roles into Air France‑KLM structures including about 1,500 at Cygnific, and expects to cut around 1,000 posts through productivity gains.
  • Management is targeting at least an 8% structural productivity improvement by 2028 and says the changes respond to high fuel and airport costs, stronger low‑cost and Gulf competition, and capacity limits at Schiphol.
