Kishtwar Cloudburst Toll at 65 With Search Ongoing as Kailash Kund Yatra Scaled Back

Authorities curtailed the Kailash Kund Yatra to a small escorted ritual to reduce risk from volatile monsoon conditions.

Overview

  • Joint teams from the Army, police, NDRF, SDRF, CISF, BRO and volunteers widened searches along the Chositi–Gulabgarh stream, using heavy machinery and controlled blasts to clear boulders.
  • Officials reported at least 65 dead, more than 100 injured and 39 still unaccounted for a week after the Machail Mata–route cloudburst in Kishtwar.
  • Engineers installed a Bailey bridge over the Chositi nullah to restore access, while the Machail yatra remains suspended as recovery operations continue.
  • The Kailash Kund Yatra began with the Charri Mubarak procession under tight security with limited pilgrim entry; women and children are barred, the Chattergala route is closed, and only traditional tracks via Sungli, Nalthi and Drafda are permitted.
  • Weather advisories prompted precautionary closures, including schools across parts of the Jammu division, and local markets linked to the Machail yatra reported steep economic losses.
