Kirron Kher Challenges ₹12.76 Lakh Government House Dues as Arbitrary

She has asked Chandigarh’s rent authority to re-examine the arrears after alleging misapplication of official accommodation rules.

Overview

  • The Office of the Assistant Controller (F&A) Rents issued a June 24 notice demanding ₹12.76 lakh in unpaid licence fees, penalties and interest or 12% annual interest on any delay.
  • The total comprises a ₹5,725 licence fee for July 2023–October 5, 2024, a 100% penalty of ₹3.64 lakh for October 6, 2024–January 5, 2025, a 200% penalty of ₹8.20 lakh for January 6–April 12, 2025, plus ₹26,106 in interest and ₹59,680 in miscellaneous charges.
  • Kher has disputed the notice, claiming she never received prior communication and arguing that maximum penalties were imposed immediately in violation of House Allotment Committee rules.
  • Local Congress president Harmohinder Singh Lucky has appealed for waiving or reducing penalties on humanitarian grounds, citing Kher’s poor health during the later part of her tenure.
  • Residents and activists have called for equitable enforcement, pointing to recent strict evictions by the Chandigarh Housing Board of other defaulters without similar leniency.
