KION Ends Local Newscasts After 56 Years, Begins Airing KPIX Coverage

The abrupt switch cut more than a dozen newsroom jobs, leaving the Central Coast without a local Spanish-language newscast.

Overview

  • KPIX newscasts began airing on KION at 5 p.m. Tuesday under the "KPIX News on KION" banner.
  • Owner News-Press & Gazette cast the move as a partnership to maintain quality coverage, and KPIX touted expanded Central Coast weather using its AR/VR studio.
  • Staff said they were notified the same day during a morning meeting or learned from media reports, with layoff estimates ranging from 13 to about 20 people.
  • Telemundo 23, which shared KION’s newsroom, also shut down and no replacement Spanish-language local newscast has been announced for the region.
  • The change leaves KSBW as the lone locally based TV newsroom in the area, and the company has offered laid-off staff pay for the remainder of their contractual year and potential relocation assistance, according to employee accounts.
