King, Queen and Starmer to Attend 80th VJ Day Service at National Memorial Arboretum

This live-broadcast service at the National Memorial Arboretum precedes nationwide flag-raisings, tree plantings and a noon silence to honour those who served in the Asia-Pacific theatres.

Overview

  • King Charles III, Queen Camilla and Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer will join 33 surviving VJ Day veterans at the Arboretum service on August 15.
  • The ceremony will feature 400 armed forces personnel, performances by military bands and flypasts from the Red Arrows and Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.
  • King Charles’s pre-recorded audio address will air live on BBC One and BBC iPlayer from 11:30 am, with large-screen viewing available on site.
  • Local councils and Royal British Legion branches across the UK are staging synchronized flag-raisings, wreath-layings, Sakura tree plantings and services at cathedrals and cenotaphs.
  • A national two-minute silence at 12:00 pm will unite communities in remembrance of Japan’s 1945 surrender and preserve the testimony of remaining veterans.
