King Praises UME Leadership as Extremadura Adds Army Patrols and Navy Equipment

Extremadura will rely on Army patrols focused on surveillance accompanied by Navy machines supporting engineering operations outside fire zones.

Overview

  • King Felipe VI visited the UME headquarters in Torrejón and praised its leadership after commanders described the fire situation as extremely critical.
  • The UME remains the lead force with 1,400 frontline troops, 2,000 support personnel and 450 deployed assets backed by nearly 400 flight hours and over 1,000 water drops by the 43rd Air Group.
  • The Junta de Extremadura will receive 20 patrols from Brigada Extremadura XI and four heavy machines from the Navy’s Rota base assigned to presence, surveillance, dissuasion and protective engineering tasks outside the emergency zones.
  • The national government reiterated that deploying the broader Ejército de Tierra against the fires can only occur after a formal national emergency declaration.
  • More than 5,000 Guardia Civil agents and over 350 National Police officers remain mobilized alongside environmental air units to manage evacuations, road closures and civil security.
