Overview
- On Tuesday May 26 the King toured the newly redeveloped Sir Robert Ogden Macmillan Cancer Centre at York Hospital, met patients and staff, and planted a Macmillan rose in the centre garden.
- He formed an immediate connection with patient representative Lou Rhodes and other users, saying it is important for people to be 'able to talk' about cancer after his own 2024 diagnosis.
- Macmillan staff said the £2.4 million refit was shaped by more than 70 local people with lived experience and is designed to support thousands of people across the region each year when it opens in July.
- Buckingham Palace reiterated that the King has 'responded exceptionally well' to treatment and continues to be monitored by doctors while carrying out public engagements.
- Earlier the same day he visited the APHA York Biotech Campus to view a developing oral‑contraceptive project for grey squirrels, reflecting his concurrent interest in conservation as well as cancer support.
