King Charles to Host Germany’s President for December State Visit at Windsor

The visit caps a year of state diplomacy featuring separate visits by the French, then the U.S., presidents.

Overview

  • Buckingham Palace said President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Elke Büdenbender will be hosted at Windsor Castle from Dec. 3–5.
  • It will be the first inward state visit by a German president in 27 years and only the fifth since 1958.
  • This will be the third incoming state visit of 2025, following President Emmanuel Macron in July and U.S. President Donald Trump in September.
  • Full programme details will be released later, with reports pointing to a ceremonial welcome, a St George’s Hall state banquet, and talks with Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer.
  • State visits are extended by the monarch at the elected government’s request and typically feature military salutes, carriage processions, and formal pageantry.
