Overview

  • The 25km Thames Tideway Tunnel, operational since October 2024, has already intercepted over six million tonnes of storm sewage.
  • Designed to address population growth and climate challenges, the tunnel can store 1.6 million cubic metres of wastewater, equivalent to 640 Olympic swimming pools.
  • King Charles III officially marked the project’s completion on May 7, 2025, after traveling to the site via a hybrid-powered Thames Clippers vessel.
  • The project involved over 25,000 workers across 24 sites and integrates public amenities such as eco-landscaping and art installations.
  • Thames Water will now manage the system as part of London’s wastewater network, ensuring cleaner water and a healthier environment for aquatic life and recreation.
