King Charles III to Address Opening of COP28 Climate Summit in UAE

Monarch returns to climate diplomacy after being barred from onsite participation in COP27, also to attend inaugural COP28 Business and Philanthropy Climate Forum.

  • King Charles III will deliver the opening address at the COP28 climate summit in the UAE; this marks his return to climate diplomacy after being advised against attending the COP27.
  • He was stopped from attending COP27 by then Prime Minister Liz Truss; however, his attendance at COP28 has support of the current UK government.
  • This marks his third time in delivering an opening speech at a climate summit, having done so at COP26 in Glasgow and COP21 in Paris as the Prince of Wales.
  • He was invited by Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE president, and will also hold meetings with regional leaders while in the UAE.
  • In addition to his address, he will also attend a reception to launch the inaugural COP28 Business and Philanthropy Climate Forum, a two-day event bringing together world leaders, business, finance, and philanthropy leaders to discuss climate solutions.
