Overview
- HMS Agamemnon was formally brought into Royal Navy service at BAE Systems’ Barrow-in-Furness shipyard.
- The boat is the sixth of the Astute class and is slated to head to HM Naval Base Clyde after completing on-site tests and sea trials.
- Agamemnon carries Spearfish torpedoes and Tomahawk cruise missiles with land-attack range up to 1,000 miles, supporting deterrent protection, carrier groups and undersea infrastructure.
- Around 500 guests attended, including Defence Secretary John Healey, First Sea Lord Sir Gwyn Jenkins, BAE chief Charles Woodburn, the US Navy Secretary and senior diplomats.
- BAE also cut steel for HMS King George VI, the fourth and final Dreadnought-class submarine, highlighting long-term investment in the UK’s nuclear deterrent.
