Overview

  • King Charles apologised for the delay in conferring the honour and joked with Khan about their shared workaholic reputation during the Buckingham Palace investiture.
  • Khan became the first London mayor to win three consecutive terms and highlighted free school meals, air quality improvements and affordable housing among his proudest achievements.
  • Over 220,000 signatures were collected against his knighthood and Conservative figures such as shadow home secretary Chris Philp criticised the award as undeserved.
  • His nomination was published in the New Year Honours list on December 30, 2024, and nearly 30 related petitions were rejected by the UK Parliament petitions committee.
  • The ceremony also recognised broadcaster Sir Loyd Grossman for heritage services and made Dame Emily Thornberry a dame for political and public service.
