King activates countdown clock showing world has just over six years to prevent catastrophic climate change
- The King and the Mayor of London have activated a climate clock to count down the time left to balance global greenhouse gas emissions and prevent the Earth from heating more than 1.5C above pre-industrial levels.
- Achieving this target is crucial for a safe and livable planet, as even sticking to 1.5C only offers a 50-50 chance of avoiding catastrophic tipping points.
- Almost every country has agreed to meet this target as part of the Paris Agreement, but the world is still not on track to meet it, according to experts.
- The climate clock shows there are six years and 24 days left before the world will have used up the carbon budget for the Paris Agreement and the Earth will inevitably heat beyond 1.5C.
- The clock will be displayed in 150 locations across the UK, including in London's Piccadilly Circus for five days.
