Kim Jong Un Lauds Returning North Korean Commanders From Russia’s Kursk Front

South Korea’s intelligence estimates more than 10,000 North Korean personnel are in Russia, with further deployments possible.

Overview

  • State media said Kim met ground commanders from the Korean People’s Army overseas unit and praised their role in Russia’s war on Ukraine.
  • KCNA reported the officers had returned to attend the first commendation ceremony for service members who served in the overseas mission.
  • South Korean intelligence assesses that North Korea has dispatched over 10,000 troops to support Russia and says another deployment may be planned.
  • KCNA earlier showed Kim paying tribute to North Korean soldiers killed in the conflict by covering their coffins with national flags.
  • The deployments come under a deepening partnership after Kim and Vladimir Putin signed a strategic treaty with a mutual defence pact in June 2024.
