'Killers of the Flower Moon' Now Streaming on Apple TV Plus

Lily Gladstone's Performance as Mollie Burkhart Garners Praise and Oscar Buzz

Martin Scorsese's 'Killers of the Flower Moon' is now available for streaming on Apple TV Plus. The film, based on David Grann’s nonfiction book, tells the story of the systematic murder of members of the wealthy Osage tribe in 1920s Oklahoma.
Lily Gladstone, who plays Mollie Burkhart, an Osage woman preyed upon by her husband, Ernest (Leonardo DiCaprio), and his rapacious uncle William Hale (Robert De Niro), has been lauded for her performance. She recently won the award for best actress in a motion picture –drama at the Golden Globes and is considered a frontrunner for the Oscar.
Gladstone's portrayal of Mollie is considered the film's beating heart, reflecting her people’s pain through her eyes. She worked extensively to learn the Osage language and culture, and was entrusted by Scorsese to revise several scenes involving her character.
The film has been criticized for its focus on the horrors inflicted by white men on the Osage people, with some feeling that the Osage characters were underwritten. However, Gladstone states that the Osage reaction is what she cares about the most.
The film is structured like a long crescendo, building steadily and inexorably, gathering dramatic momentum and an impressive amount of detail. Despite its length, it does not drag, and Scorsese and his longtime editor Thelma Schoonmaker have a fluid editing style that eschews establishing shots and downtime in favor of short interlocking scenes, overlapping audio, and sudden, unpredictable cuts.
