Killer Who Drove Into Crowd at Sheffield Wedding Brawl Faces Sentencing

Victim statements describe how Chris Marriott died helping an injured woman during violence prosecutors said involved a car used as a weapon.

Overview

  • Sentencing is under way at Sheffield Crown Court before Mr Justice Morris for 25-year-old Hassan Jhangur, who was convicted in July of murdering Chris Marriott.
  • Marriott’s widow, Bryony, told the court her husband “had a compassionate heart and loved helping, supporting and empowering others.”
  • Jurors found Jhangur used his Seat Ibiza to hit multiple people during a street fight on December 27, 2023, killing Marriott, who had stopped to help, and injuring Good Samaritan Alison Norris as well as members of both families.
  • After the crash, Jhangur stabbed his new brother-in-law, Hasan Khan, and was found guilty of his wounding; he was acquitted of attempting to murder Khan.
  • Jhangur was also convicted of causing grievous bodily harm with intent to several named victims, and his father, Mohammed Jhangur, was found guilty of perverting the course of justice for concealing a knife, with both being sentenced today.
