Kigali Road Worlds Enter Pivotal Phase With Brutal High-Altitude Courses

Relentless climbing at elevation will define tactics.

Overview

  • The first Road World Championships on African soil run in Kigali from 21 to 28 September with the next road races set for the weekend.
  • The men face 267.5 km and 5,475 m of climbing, the women 164.6 km with roughly 3,350 m, on circuits at about 1,500 m elevation.
  • The U23 road race rolls off Friday on an 11-lap, 165 km circuit, with the elite men tackling 15 laps plus an extra loop on Sunday that includes rough cobbles.
  • Tadej Pogacar targets the road title and enters the time trial against two-time champion Remco Evenepoel, with Primoz Roglic selected and Jonas Vingegaard sitting out.
  • Germany lines up under national champion Georg Zimmermann with Maximilian Schachmann and others, leaving out Florian Lipowitz and Nils Politt, as on-site reporting notes fervent crowds, heavy security checks and costly official hotels.
