Kia Recalls 250,000 K5 Sedans Over Fuel-Tank Defect

The issue stems from a purge-valve failure that can pressurize the fuel tank, causing expansion with potential leaks.

Overview

  • The recall covers 250,547 K5 sedans from model years 2021–2024 with 1.6L T‑GDI engines built at Kia’s Georgia plant between March 27, 2020 and January 23, 2024.
  • A deteriorating check valve can allow intake pressure into the tank, which may expand, contact hot exhaust components, melt and leak, increasing fire risk.
  • Dealers will replace the faulty valve and inspect the fuel tank, replacing it if needed, at no charge to owners under Kia recall number SC356.
  • Owner notification letters are planned for mid-January 2026, and drivers can check their VINs in NHTSA’s database for eligibility.
  • Kia reports no known crashes or injuries related to the defect, and Hyundai has issued a similar Sonata recall affecting about 85,000 vehicles.
