Overview
- The inaugural Kharghar Hill Mayor Marathon, which was held Sunday, featured a full 42‑km hill race plus 21.2‑km, 10‑km, 5‑km and 3‑km categories and drew organisers’ reports of roughly 9,000 participants.
- Event organisers secured certification from the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS) and said the validation will be used to market future editions to runners from across India and abroad.
- The race included a dedicated category for persons with disabilities with about 100 participants and saw broad civic participation, including NMMC commissioner Dr Kailas Shinde completing the half marathon in 2:26:22.
- Panvel Municipal Corporation deployed medical teams, physiotherapists and ambulances and set route checkpoints through Central Park, Utsav Chowk, Belpada Metro Station, Tata Memorial Centre and other local points to manage the hill course.
- Organisers and local officials framed the event as a tool to boost local sport, tourism and the economy and to build on the Mumbai region’s established marathon culture by positioning Kharghar as a new venue for endurance events.
