Khanna, Massie Set Sept. 3 Capitol Event With Epstein Victims, Plan Petition Launch Sept. 2

The lawmakers are using a discharge petition to bypass leadership to force a vote on releasing Justice Department records.

Overview

  • Ro Khanna said on Meet the Press that he and Thomas Massie will host a Wednesday news conference on the Capitol steps with 10 Epstein victims calling for the release of DOJ files, with many speaking publicly for the first time.
  • Khanna said the discharge petition goes live Tuesday with commitments from all 212 House Democrats and 12 Republicans, and he voiced confidence the measure will pass when members return.
  • He noted that only six of those Republicans would need to sign to reach the 218 signatures required to force a House vote.
  • The proposal would direct Attorney General Pam Bondi to publish all unclassified DOJ, FBI, and U.S. Attorney materials related to Epstein in a searchable, downloadable format within 30 days of enactment.
  • The House is scheduled to return Tuesday after more than 40 days away, following an early recess in July that Mediaite reported Speaker Mike Johnson used to avoid a vote on a similar resolution.
