Overview
- TfL proposes closing Oxford Street between Orchard Street and Great Portland Street to most traffic, barring buses, taxis, private hire, cycles, scooters and pedicabs, with emergency access maintained and overnight servicing allowed from midnight to 07:00.
- Fifteen bus routes would be rerouted or curtailed, with many services diverted via Wigmore Street and several terminating at Marble Arch, and new nearby stops and taxi ranks proposed.
- TfL modelling indicates small journey-time increases for most services but larger delays for routes 98 and 390 at peak times, plus up to about 300 additional morning-peak vehicles on Regent Street and increases on Wigmore Street.
- Passengers would typically walk an extra 100 to 200 metres to reach Oxford Street, cycling would be prohibited in the pedestrianised zone, and TfL plans to work with Westminster City Council on alternative cycling links.
- Retailers such as Selfridges and the New West End Company expressed support, resident groups including the Marylebone Association warned of congestion, reduced accessibility and safety concerns, and subject to feedback delivery could begin in the second half of 2026.
