Jack Hughes, one of the Devils' leading players with a NHL-leading 15 assists and 20 points, left the game early due to an upper-body injury, sustained after crashing into the boards without any penalty called on the play.
Apart from Hayes, Jake Neighbours and Robert Thomas also scored for the Blues, with Thomas netting an empty-net goal in the final seconds, and Blues goalie Jordan Binnington made crucial saves, stopping 34 shots.
New Jersey Devils were already missing center Nico Hischier due to an upper-body injury, marking their second significant center injury with Hughes' exit from the game.
The Blues took control of the game with an 11-7 shot advantage in the first period and took their lead to 2-0 in the second period before Curtis Lazar scored for the Devils to make it 2-1.
