Kevin Ahn Ruled Incompetent to Stand Trial and Committed to State Hospital

The ruling pauses the Baltimore County double-murder case pending restoration of competency.

Overview

  • Baltimore County Circuit Judge Judith C. Ensor found Ahn unable to understand proceedings or assist counsel and deemed him dangerous, ordering treatment at a state-run psychiatric facility.
  • Ahn, 31, is charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the March deaths of Sun Lim, 83, and In Kim, 69, in an Owings Mills home.
  • Detectives allege he staged the scene to look like a suicide and tried to break into a safe, while investigators continue to examine his mother Hyun Ahn’s death.
  • Police in Pennsylvania found Hyun Ahn’s body in the family SUV on March 24 after his sister called 911 and reported a note on the dashboard; no charge has been filed in that death.
  • Ahn was extradited from Pennsylvania to Maryland in July, is held without bail, and recent hearings featured erratic courtroom behavior, including his insistence that he is “competent.”
