Kerala’s Newly Elected Local Bodies Sworn In Under SEC Protocols

The SEC’s supervised ceremonies completed the handover ahead of leadership votes set for December 26–27.

Overview

  • Members across corporations, municipalities, and the three-tier panchayat system took oath on December 21, with the senior-most member sworn in first by designated officials.
  • District Collectors oversaw ceremonies in corporations and district panchayats, while Returning Officers handled grama and block panchayats and municipal councils.
  • New councils held inaugural meetings and will elect mayors and municipal chairpersons on December 26, followed by deputy heads that afternoon, and panchayat presidents and vice-presidents on December 27.
  • The SEC set a quorum of at least half the eligible voters for leadership polls, with adjournment to the next working day if unmet, when voting may proceed without a quorum.
  • Statewide results frame the next contests as the UDF holds four of six corporations, the LDF retains Kozhikode, the BJP leads Thiruvananthapuram with 50 seats, and a Vizhinjam ward poll is scheduled for January 12.
