Kerala Well Rescue Turns Fatal as Wall Collapse Kills Woman, Partner and Fire Officer

Police have opened an unnatural-death case following the recovery of a video indicating prior assault.

Overview

  • The deaths occurred during an early-morning operation in Neduvathoor, Kollam, after Archana jumped into a well following a domestic dispute, according to police.
  • Fire and Rescue officer Sony S Kumar descended into the well using a safety harness to reach her when the concrete barricade around the well collapsed.
  • Police said Archana’s partner, Sivakrishna, reportedly intoxicated and leaning on the wall to look inside, fell in with the debris, trapping all three.
  • Archana and Sivakrishna were declared dead on arrival, and the rescuer, who was pulled up by his harness, died later in hospital, officials said.
  • Puthoor police registered a case under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, completed postmortems for Archana and the rescuer, and scheduled Sivakrishna’s for Tuesday as investigators review the video and other evidence.
