Kerala to Declare Itself Free of Extreme Poverty on Nov. 1

Officials credit a targeted, audited drive since 2021 that reports 59,277 of 64,006 identified families have exited extreme deprivation.

Overview

  • Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will make the announcement at Thiruvananthapuram’s Central Stadium on Kerala Piravi Day, with actors Mohanlal, Mammootty and Kamal Haasan among invited guests.
  • A 2021 ground survey led by Kudumbashree and local bodies identified 64,006 families using multidimensional indicators covering food, health, shelter, education and livelihoods, followed by micro-plans for each household.
  • The government says 59,277 families have been lifted out of extreme poverty, with 4,729 cases unresolved due to 4,421 recorded deaths among single-member families, 261 untraced nomadic or migrant families and 47 duplicate entries.
  • Key interventions included issuing essential documents to 21,263 people, building 3,913 houses, allotting land to 1,338 families and funding repairs for 5,651 homes up to ₹2 lakh, alongside health, education and livelihood support.
  • Monitoring measures include geo-tagging of beneficiary homes and an ongoing social audit, and Kerala cites NITI Aayog’s 2021 MPI finding of a 0.7% multidimensional poverty rate as the baseline for its effort.
