Kerala Strengthens Containment After Sixth Nipah Case Awaits Pune Confirmation

Authorities await final confirmation from Pune as hundreds of contacts undergo fever surveillance in six alert districts

  • A 58-year-old man from Kumaramputhur near Mannarkkad died on July 12 in a Perinthalmanna hospital and tested positive for Nipah in initial Manjeri Medical College tests pending confirmation from the National Institute of Virology, Pune.
  • Contact tracing teams have identified between 543 and 609 individuals statewide, including 46 linked to the latest case, who remain under observation and quarantine.
  • Seventeen wards within a three-kilometre radius of the patient’s home in Kumaramputhur have been declared containment zones with movement restrictions and door-to-door fever surveys.
  • State Health Minister Veena George and a Union Ministry team led by Dr. Pranay Verma have intensified surveillance by using CCTV footage, mobile tower data, route mapping and family trees.
  • Hospitals in Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur, Wayanad and Thrissur districts are on alert to report encephalitis or high-fever cases and enforce mask mandates and visitor limits.
