Kerala Steps Up Containment Following Sixth Nipah Death in Palakkad

Authorities have launched intensive contact tracing alongside fever surveillance across six districts pending confirmation from Pune’s National Institute of Virology.

Contact tracing was immediately started to find those who were in contact with the deceased. Forty-six people are on the contact list.

  • Health officials have identified 46 close contacts of the deceased and placed a total of 543 people under observation statewide, using CCTV footage, mobile-tower data and detailed route mapping to trace exposures.
  • Fever surveillance teams are conducting door-to-door symptom checks in Palakkad and nearby areas and have intensified field operations around the patient’s village.
  • Hospitals in Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur, Wayanad and Thrissur have been instructed to limit bystanders to one per patient and enforce mandatory mask-wearing and symptom reporting.
  • Final confirmation from the National Institute of Virology in Pune is awaited before authorities determine additional containment measures and strengthen response teams.
