Overview
- A four-member committee was constituted on Tuesday to draft the Kerala AYUSH University Bill and has been given two months to submit its proposal.
- The panel is chaired by the Principal Secretary of the AYUSH department and includes the State Mission Director of the National AYUSH Mission, the Director of Ayurveda Medical Education and the head of the Government Homoeopathic Medical College.
- The proposed university would be headquartered at the School of Fundamental Research in Ayurveda, Tripunithura, while existing AYUSH colleges will remain affiliated to Kerala University of Health Sciences until a law and implementation steps follow.
- The committee has been asked to set out the university’s academic and administrative structure, governance framework and research priorities with a focus on clinical studies and drug development.
- If the bill is approved by the state cabinet and legislature, the move could centralize regulation and training across AYUSH systems, affect students and faculty governance, and raise Kerala’s profile in traditional medicine research.
