Kerala Set to Be Declared India’s First Fully Digitally Literate State on Aug. 21

A statewide volunteer-led campaign delivered basic smartphone skills to close the digital divide.

Overview

  • Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will make the declaration at Thiruvananthapuram’s Central Stadium on Thursday.
  • Surveys across 83.46 lakh families identified 21.88 lakh people as digitally illiterate, of whom 21.87 lakh completed training and passed evaluations for a 99.98% success rate.
  • More than 257,000 volunteers from preraks, Kudumbashree, MGNREGA, NSS and library networks conducted door-to-door surveys and training.
  • The programme used a three-part module covering smartphone basics, WhatsApp and video calls, Google and YouTube use, and online payments for utilities.
  • Elderly inclusion was significant, with over 15,000 learners above 90 and a 105-year-old Ernakulam resident recognized as the eldest to qualify.
