Overview
- Bedakam police arrested M. Ashokan, headmaster of Kundamkuzhi Government Higher Secondary School, on August 19 following a complaint by the student’s parents.
- He was booked under Sections 126(2) and 115(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Section 75 of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act.
- The family says the headmaster slapped the 15-year-old during the August 11 assembly for moving pebbles with his foot, and that doctors later confirmed a ruptured eardrum with surgery recommended.
- Ashokan has denied physically assaulting the student, saying he only reprimanded him for misbehaviour.
- The Kerala State Commission for Protection of Child Rights launched an inquiry after visiting the student, and Education Minister V. Sivankutty sought a report from the District Education Officer as police earlier dispersed Youth Congress protests outside the school.
