Kerala Records 28% Shortfall in Southwest Monsoon Rainfall

Weather officials say El Niño weakened the monsoon, leaving high‑range districts especially short of rain with brief heavy showers unlikely to erase the deficit.

Overview

  • IMD figures for the June 1–September 17 period released on Sept. 17, 2026 show Kerala received 1,380.3 mm of rain against a normal 1,908.5 mm, a 28 percent shortfall.
  • Wayanad and Idukki suffered the largest deficits at 54 percent and 47 percent respectively, and eight of the state’s 14 districts recorded deficient rainfall.
  • Six districts—Kannur, Kasaragod, Kottayam, Kozhikode, Pathanamthitta and Thiruvananthapuram—had near‑normal totals according to the IMD.
  • State weather officials and meteorological experts attribute the weak monsoon largely to El Niño’s disruption of the atmosphere and ocean patterns that drive the southwest monsoon.
  • The state Weather Department has warned that isolated heavy downpours are possible in the coming days but that short bursts of rain are unlikely to make up the accumulated seasonal deficit, raising local concerns for high‑range communities and agriculture.
