Kerala on Orange Alert for Heavy Rain as Thiruvananthapuram Closes Schools

Forecasters say a Bay of Bengal low could strengthen within 24 hours.

Overview

  • The IMD placed eight districts on orange alert on Friday: Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam and Thrissur.
  • Thiruvananthapuram’s District Collector ordered all educational institutions shut for the day, while scheduled public examinations will proceed.
  • Overnight downpours flooded downtown Thampanoor, making access difficult to the Central Railway Station and the main bus stand.
  • Squally weather with winds of 40–50 km/h, gusting to 60 km/h, is expected along the Kerala, Karnataka and Lakshadweep coasts, and fishermen were advised to stay ashore until Saturday.
  • The IMD forecast thunderstorms with light to moderate rain and surface winds up to 40 km/h, with moderate rain and 30 km/h winds at isolated spots in Malappuram and Kozhikode.
