Kerala Local Body Polls: Phase I Turnout at 70.9% as SEC Orders Mannanchery Repoll, Phase II on Thursday

Thursday’s polling across seven northern and central districts will run under extensive security, including live webcasting at sensitive booths.

  • Phase I across seven southern districts concluded largely peacefully, with the State Election Commission reporting a provisional 70.9% turnout.
  • Ernakulam logged the highest participation at roughly 74.6% while Pathanamthitta was lowest near 66.8%, according to SEC’s late-night update.
  • The SEC ordered a repoll on December 11 in Mannanchery, Alappuzha, covering Ambalakkadavu ward in the grama panchayat, the Mannanchery ward in Aryad block panchayat, and the Aryad block of the district panchayat after an EVM fault.
  • Polling was postponed in three wards due to candidate deaths: Payimbadam (Moothedam, Malappuram), Onakkoor (Pambakkuda, Ernakulam), and Vizhinjam (Thiruvananthapuram).
  • Phase II will cover 604 local bodies and 12,391 wards for about 1.53 crore voters, with 18,274 polling stations and 2,055 sensitive booths under live webcasting; counting statewide begins December 13 on the SEC’s TREND portal.
