Kerala Launches Suraksha Mithram Child Protection Initiative Across Schools

The scheme equips schools with confidential help boxes through phased teacher training, relying on multiagency support under a forthcoming operating procedure.

Overview

  • Every school in Kerala will install a confidential ‘help box’ to collect student reports, which headteachers will open weekly and forward for departmental action.
  • The Centre for Child Development under the Health Department will oversee a three-phase teacher training programme beginning with Classes 8–12 before covering primary and upper-primary educators.
  • Departments of Women and Child Development, Social Justice, Local Self-Government, Health and Police will coordinate to provide medical care, counselling and rehabilitation for affected children.
  • Existing child welfare structures, including the Child Welfare Committee and helpline 1098, will be strengthened and block-level parenting clinics will be activated to support families.
  • The Director of Public Education is finalizing a Standard Operating Procedure to standardize child safety protocols and guide implementation across schools.
