Kerala Freezes New K-TET Rules, Moves Supreme Court Review

The step follows union objections to retroactive enforcement of new eligibility requirements.

Overview

  • General Education Minister V. Sivankutty announced the suspension of the January 1 guidelines for teacher appointments and promotions pending further review.
  • The state will file a review petition in the Supreme Court, with an affidavit prepared and officials directed to expedite the process after consultations.
  • A special K-TET has been scheduled for February 2026 to allow in-service teachers to obtain the qualification.
  • The frozen guidelines had withdrawn exemptions for higher qualifications such as SET, NET, MPhil, PhD and MEd, clarified category-to-post mappings, and retained CTET exemptions for LP and UP posts.
  • The government estimates nearly 40,000 teachers in Classes I–VIII could be affected and has assured that no teacher appointed before April 1, 2010 will lose their job.
