Kerala Forms SIT With Cyber Experts to Probe Allegations Against MLA Rahul Mamkootathil

A dedicated Crime Branch team led by DySP V. Binu Kumar now prioritizes cyber analysis alongside victim statements.

Overview

  • Kerala Police Crime Branch constituted a Special Investigation Team that includes cyber-forensic experts and named DySP V. Binu Kumar as investigating officer.
  • The move follows a suo motu case registered on the state DGP’s direction under BNS sections 78(2) and 351 and Kerala Police Act 120(O) for stalking, criminal intimidation and repeated electronic harassment.
  • Investigators plan to summon Rahul Mamkootathil, seize electronic devices, and seek court approval for forensic examinations such as voice authentication, IP tracing and timestamp analysis.
  • Police aim to formally record statements from those named in media reports, including Rini Ann George, writer Honey Bhaskaran, transgender activist Avantika and the woman heard in the pregnancy-related audio, as most have not filed complaints.
  • Mamkootathil remains suspended from Congress and, per the Opposition leader, is out of the party’s legislative group; he denies the leaked voice is his, while the Chief Minister has called the alleged remarks deeply criminal and promised protection for complainants.
